The development of the National Drought Policy for Solomon Islands (NDPSI) was guided by the Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP). The IDMP is a joint initiative between WMO and the Global Water Program which provides best practice guidelines on drought monitoring/early warning, prediction and information delivery.
ClimateABILITY’s Director Amanda Amjadali and her former team at PSS undertook an analysis of all international, regional and national strategies and plans that were relevant to forming the NDPSI.
A four-day stakeholder consultation workshop was facilitated by the team in order to gather information to identify the types droughts that occur in Solomon Islands. The past and potential impacts of droughts, what climate information is need and when it is needed in order to prepare and respond to a drought.
This process led to the development of a drought monitoring policy for SIMS based on rainfall in Solomon Islands and identifying ways to strengthen institutional capacity to coordinate and respond to a drought.
