Drought Monitoring Plan for Funafuti, Tuvalu

The development of the FDMP was guided by the Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP). The IDMP is a joint initiative between WMO and the Global Water Program which provides best practice guidelines on drought monitoring/early warning, prediction and information delivery.

As co-Director of PSS, ClimateABILITY’s Director Amanda Amjadali and her team undertook an analysis of all international, regional and national strategies and plans that were relevant to forming the FDMP.

A two-day stakeholder consultation workshop was facilitated by Amanda’s team to gather information to identify the types droughts that occur in Funafuti. The past and potential impacts of droughts, what climate information is need and when it is needed in order to prepare and respond to a drought.

This process led to the development of a drought monitoring advisory for TMS based on rainfall and water usage in Funafuti and identifying ways to strengthen institutional capacity to coordinate and respond to a drought.
